This illustration was published during WWII, so the girl with the weird hat actually had some options that are no long available to young women:  namely, the women's volunteer units of the armed forces.  However, let's not pout.  While Little Miss Weird Hat can join the WACS or the WAVES (or even the WASPS), she also has to put up with World War Two, which was totally lame.
